We had an exceptionally lovely “December” book club meeting on January 8 . Thank you Natasha for hosting!
Six ladies were present enjoying the cool ocean breezes and the spectacular night sky.
White Teeth got mixed ratings from several nines to 4.5 and 6 from ladies who had not had the opportunity to finish the book yet. Overall total score came up to 6.9 /10 points.
White Teeth by Zadie Smith Is a very thought provoking book, filled with almost exhaustingly frequent plot changes, packed with surprises - at times a bit on the heavy side with maybe already outdated enthusiasm about scientific discoveries, animal rights concerns, exploration to religious and racial issues; all those “hot” topics that in Today’s London hardly would make big waves anymore, certainly not a tsunami!
This book could have been a rare find from a “country girl’s” (me) perspective when it first came out more than a decade ago, yet Zadie Smith’s White Teeth is an interesting read even today, she sure fits about anything and everything in a tight entertaining bundle - her writing style is very captivating - and I must confess I laughed out loud at least a dozen times!
Jennifer commented via email:
“Kirsti,
I give this book an 8 or even 8.5. Style tends to be long winded but character presentation is realistic enough. The whole story makes a good curry but at times I feel there’s too much curry in the curry, if you know what I mean.
I’m glad to have been introduced to this book. “
Thank you Jennifer!
